Back Story
I, Erica Carlberg, have been a plant-based eater for over 10 years. I have always had a passion for following a holistic and nutritious diet. I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to New York City after graduating from high school in 2017. In NYC, I managed an organic plant-based cafe. Many of the concepts and ideas in Planted came from my experiences and influences in NYC. When COVID hit, my restaurant was forced to close and I decided to move back to Cleveland. I started a plan to open my own plant-based cafe in Cleveland. That is when I met Eric Nugent, a owner of Two Bucks and Red Lantern. He helped me to open Planted as a virtual ghost restaurant in Red Lantern’s then-vacant kitchen.

Red Lantern Kitchen & Bar has been a staple in West Park for 40+ years.  (it was under previous ownership for over 30 years). The owners of Two Bucks, Eric Nugent, Sean Nugent, and Cory Rowland, had an opportunity to expand their business into the West Park area. Instead of turning Red Lantern into another Two Bucks chain, they loved the idea of paying homage to the previous establishment and keeping the name while putting a modern spin on it. They love the neighborhood and community and bought Red Lantern in 2013, completely renovated it, then opened in spring 2014. They wanted to differentiate from other popular bars/restaurants by introducing upscale cuisine while still keeping the dishes fairly priced without sacrificing any quality.

A New and Reinvented Menu
Chef Devon Locigno has a longtime history with Red Lantern. He started working as a sous chef in 2015. Since then he has traveled the country gaining experience in fine dining and world-class restaurants. He came back to Red Lantern this October. Chef Dev used his creativity, talent, and expertise to reinvent the Red Lantern menu for re-opening!

The new menu features traditional Italian dishes that are completely made from scratch. Chef Dev has beautifully joined together the flavors of Southern and Northern Italy creating a unique and savory Mediterranean flavor palate. In the kitchen, Chef Dev embraces his Sicilian background by incorporating recipes that were in his family for generations.
