CMSD has announced a series of regional meetings to gather input on their revised school construction plan, a plan that puts construction of new buildings for Douglas MacArthur Girls’ Leadership Academy and Valley View Boys’ Leadership Academy in jeopardy.

Back in 2014, both schools were slated for new construction as part of Segment 8 of the building plan, with construction was originally planned to break ground in 2017. Changes in the way that the state’s construction and facilities commission calculated their contributions to local school districts for new school construction shortchanged CMSD on the amount they could spend on new facilities, meaning that only a portion (13 of the 22 planned schools) can be built.

Douglas MacArthur Girls’ Leadership Academy and Valley View Boys’ Leadership Academy are the only single-gender K-8 public schools on the West Side of Cleveland, and both are in outdated facilities and over capacity. Both schools are valuable community assets, and as a neighborhood, we need to show our support and make sure they are in the best facilities and remain in West Park.

Our southwest regional meeting takes place at 6 pm Wednesday, April 17th at New Tech West School. Come out and support our neighborhood schools!

Municipal Parking Lot Closure Tuesday May 28 through Thursday May 30 For Resurfacing

The city owned parking lot bordered by W. 168 and Albers Avenue (behind Walgreens and West Park Station restaurant) will be closed completely from 6AM Tuesday, May 28-Thursday, May 30 at 8pm. Vehicles parked in the lot during these hours will be subject to towing at the owner’s expense. The closure will allow for the resurfacing and striping of the parking lot as the final piece of it’s renovation

Three days of closure will bring us a completely renovated parking lot, including “bioswales” that will divert nearly 1,000,000 gallons of stormwater runoff from our sewer system and the Rocky River. The project was primarily funded through a $250,000 grant from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), secured by KCDC with the assistance of Councilman Marty Keane. The City of Cleveland kicked in the rest of the funding, and has managed the project. In addition to the bio-infrastucture, new bike racks have been installed near the walkway adjacent to Backstage Bar, and a new sidewalk exiting to Albers Avenue has been added.
Due to an improved striping design, no parking spaces have been lost!
A gala ribbon cutting including Councilman Keane, and representatives of NEORSD, the City of Cleveland, Cook Paving (General Contractor), and KCDC will take place in the parking lot on the opening day of the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market on Sunday, June 9 at 11:30am.
Please join us for the festivities and a little shopping too!
